Canada Visa Application — Dos & Don'ts

Do's

Write a strong SOP for study permits

Explain program fit, career goals, and why you will leave Canada after your studies.

Show a clear travel history

Previous compliant travel strengthens credibility for temporary resident applications.

Demonstrate sufficient funds

Bank statements and proof of income should match your stated plans and IRCC requirements.

Prove genuine temporary resident intent

For TRV and study, show ties to home country and intent to comply with visa conditions.

Submit a complete application

Use IRCC checklists, sign forms, and upload all mandatory documents in the correct format.

Complete biometrics early

Book your VFS appointment as soon as IRCC instructs you to avoid processing delays.

Don'ts

Don't provide fake documents

Misrepresentation can lead to a ban from Canada and long-term immigration consequences.

Don't miss your biometrics appointment

Failing to give biometrics on time can stall or jeopardize your application.

Don't overstay previous visas

History of overstays or violations hurts trust for any new Canadian application.

Don't leave gaps in employment history

Unexplained gaps raise questions; explain study, travel, or caregiving clearly in your forms.

Don't submit unclear photos

Follow IRCC photo specs exactly — poor quality images are a common reason for delays.

Don't apply without research

Wrong stream, missing forms, or ignoring eligibility rules wastes fees and time.

Step-by-Step Canada Visa Application Process

Step 1

Check Eligibility on IRCC

Use the official IRCC website to confirm which visa or permit you need (TRV, study, work, or PR pathway). Review document lists and whether you need a medical exam or police certificate.

Document-based assessment (no embassy interview for most TRV/study/work)
Step 2

Create a GCKey Account and Fill the Application

Sign in with GCKey or your banking partner sign-in, create your IRCC secure account, and complete the online application (e.g. IMM 5257 for a visitor visa). Upload scans per IRCC specifications.

Save your application often; note your UCI if you have one
Step 3

Pay Fees Online

Pay the correct IRCC fees online (for example CAD $100 for a visitor visa, CAD $150 for study or work permit applications where applicable). Keep receipts for your records.

Biometrics fee is separate when required
Step 4

Submit Biometrics at VFS

When IRCC sends a biometrics instruction letter, book an appointment at VFS Global (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chandigarh, or as directed). Attend on time with your passport and letter.

Step 5

Submit Application Online or at VAC

Submit your complete application through your IRCC online account, or follow instructions to submit passports or forms at a VAC when paper submission is required for your case.

Pro tip: Monitor your IRCC account and email for additional document requests.
Step 6

Wait for Decision and Passport Request

Processing often takes 4-12 weeks depending on volume and your case. When approved, IRCC will instruct you to send your passport for visa issuance or will confirm your permit details. Follow VAC/VFS instructions for return of documents.

TRV validity: up to 10 years in many cases (linked to passport)

Frequently Asked Questions — Canada Visa

Most TRV and study permit applications are document-based. IRCC reviews your forms and uploads; there is usually no in-person interview like a US visa. In rare cases, IRCC may request an interview or more information.
An eTA is for visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada. Indian citizens typically need a visitor visa (TRV) stamped in the passport, not an eTA. Always confirm current requirements on the official IRCC website.
A multiple-entry TRV can be valid for up to 10 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. The officer decides the validity; each stay is still limited by the border officer's stamp (often up to six months per visit unless stated otherwise).
Common reasons include weak proof of temporary intent, insufficient funds, unclear travel purpose, weak ties to your home country, or concerns about documents. Read the refusal letter, address gaps with new evidence, and consider reapplying or a judicial review depending on advice you receive.
No. A visitor visa does not authorize work. You need a valid work permit (or be in a specific exempt category). Working without authorization can seriously harm future immigration applications.
